Posted on: November 4th, 2010 by thsdc

This year, we’ve decided to compile a check list of things you need ( or might want ) to bring to the tournament. If you have any questions, please feel free to comment on this post or email thsdc.info@gmail.com!!

1. Yourself ( Obviously )
2. Stationary

  • Writing instruments ( Pen / Pencil / Colored Pen / High-lighter etc. )
  • Paper ( We won’t be providing paper!!! don’t have enough budget for it :( )
  • Stopwatch ( Or something that helps you time. We won’t be allowing cellphones during prep-time!! )

3. Computer ( If you still need to do research. )

  • Charger
  • There’s free wireless internet access on the 1st floor of King David dormitory and in John XXIII Conference Hall.
  • If you’re staying in double or single room, please bring a LAN line to access the internet. There’s no wireless in the room.
  • We’re not sure if there’s printing service this year but don’t get your hopes up. Please try to print everything you might need in advance before coming to our tournament!!

4. Mobile Phone & its charger ( Yes, we know all of you have one. Please bring it and turn it on in case we can’t find you!! )

5. Toiletries

  • Soap
  • Shampoo
  • Toothbrush & Toothpaste
  • Towel

6. Insect Repellent ( The mosquitoes in our campus is famously fierce and big )

7. Clothing

  • 3 sets of polite casual wear… or uniform if your institution prefer. Polite casual wear = no mini shorts & mini skirt, no ragged clothing. no tank top or singlets (สายเดี่ยว) by itself. No jandles or sandals without straps. Dress with respect to our University’s campus.
  • ( EDIT ) We’re providing free tournament t-shirt. All participants are required to wear it on 7th November!! It looks nice in photos!
  • Formal wear for break-night! It’s gonna be grand! Example of dress code here.
  • ( EDIT ) All participants are required to wear their full uniform on 9th November!!
  • WARM CLOTHING ( I know it’s Thailand, but our air conditioning is FAMOUS for causing hypothermia. )

8. ( Added on 31.10.2010 ) Camera!! There’ll be wayyy too many photo opportunities… I mean, it’s not everyday that you’d get to dress up in formal wear?

Phew, hope that’s everything. Will keep updating this post if we have anything else we want you to bring!

A friendly reminder : Payment deadline

Posted on: October 29th, 2010 by thsdc

Dear institutions…

Today is the last day for payment ( unless you’ve negotiated with us earlier this week ). Please send us the scanned ( or photographed) copy of the transfer slip to thsdc.info@gmail.com to confirm your registration.

Today is also the last chance for you to edit your registration using the excel sheet we’ve sent to your contact person’s email. Any changes after this will not be reflected in the certificates and awards.

Many schools decided to send more observers and adjudicators in the last minute. Please be informed that no observer and additional adjudicator registration will be accepted after TODAY. We’re confirming our booking on food, accommodation and etc. today and it’ll be extremely difficult for us to make change after tonight.

The website has been updated with loads of new information to help you prepare for the tournament. Do check www.thsdc.au.eduoften to catch these updates!

Look forward to seeing you all!!

Yours sincerely

IMPORTANT : Adjudicators for N=1 rule

Posted on: October 28th, 2010 by thsdc

A lot of institutions are using university students as their judge to complete the N=1 rule. This automatically means :

  1. Your institution is covering their registration fees.
  2. They’ll be staying on the 13th floor shared dormitory with the debaters and not in rooms with other invited university judges. Unless of course you’re willing to pay their double or single room fees which is 3,200 THB and 4,500 THB respectively.
  3. That particular judge needs to stay for at least 6 preliminary rounds in order for you to break! The whole objective of enforcing n=1 rule is to encourage teachers and non-debating debaters to be more involved in the activity and help the club sustain in the long run. If you don’t want to grow more adjudicators, then at least find judges who’d stay for 6 rounds. It is very unfair on teams who managed to find people unfamiliar to debate from their own institutions, and made them adjudicate for the whole tournament. More over, it screws up the tab and that will delay the tournament!!

Call for Adjudicators!

Posted on: October 28th, 2010 by thsdc

Dear Thailand’s debate community,

Assumption University is hosting the 5th Thailand High-School National Debating Championship on 6th – 9th November this year, that’s Saturday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. It’d be awesome if all of you ( both active and non-active judges ) can join us. We have about 50 teams from 16 schools this year and we’ll DESPERATELY need judges. ( Minimum of 25 Chairs for all prelim rounds….? ). Uni judges who aren’t included in any school’s n=1 rule will be entitled to free access to accommodation, food and possibly transportation. We’ll provide transportation from Huamak – Bangna if there’s enough people to fill the van, will keep you all up to date regarding this. If you need invitation letter ( for you to miss your classes on Monday and Tuesday ), send us an email at thsdc.info@gmail.com and we’ll give you a copy.

Please register using the excel sheet here and send it to thsdc.info@gmail.com by Monday evening – 1st October 2010. ( Or else we can’t provide accommodation or transportation for you :( ) If possible, please try to register as an institution? I mean, if everyone send their details individually, we might lose someone’s registration by accident no?

Please please please be at the break-rounds on Monday and Tuesday also. We don’t want to lose our good breaking judges do we?

The tournament schedule can be found here.

For those of you who are bringing your own car, please mention in the registration sheet that you need overnight parking and state the number plate.

We look forward to welcoming you all at our tournament!

Ps. Formal wear for break night, we might be using the museum :p

Overnight parking !!!

Posted on: October 28th, 2010 by thsdc

To all those who’re planning to park your car at our dorm for the while tournament, PLEASE GIVE US THE NUMBER PLATE OF THAT CAR!!!! Or else the dormitory will not allow you to park. Tell us what car you’re parking via thsdc.info@gmail.com by 29th October.

This is actually very important and that’s why we’ve included it in our registration form earlier. But hardly anyone told us the number plate. Please confirm ASAP!

Break-night : dress to impress

Posted on: October 28th, 2010 by thsdc

Formal wear is the actual dress code for this year’s break-night so dress UP! If you don’t know what formal wear is, here’re some pictures!

Please make your changes in that excel we’ve sent you. Every school should received such emails by today. Thank you for your co-operation.

Policy on picking up awards & certificates

Posted on: October 15th, 2010 by thsdc 2 Comments

Certificates

Since this year, registration is done online. We’ll assume that all the spelling is correct. We’ve clearly stated that the last day anyone can make changes to their institutions registration is on 25th October ( extended to 29th October ). Thus there should be no reason why certificates need corrections. We will not be making any changes to the certificates and we will not post any to your institution afterwards.

Posting Awards

All institutions are REQUIRED to send at least 1 representative to the closing ceremony on 9th October to receive their certificates and awards. Trophies and certificates will NOT be posted to you afterwards like in the past.

We apologise for any inconveniences caused and we look forward to hear from you all.

Regarding SAT test conflict

Posted on: September 2nd, 2010 by thsdc

Yes we are well aware that there’s SAT test on Saturday 6th November. But we aren’t so worried about it because as usual, adjudication test will be in the morning. We’ve also added the council meeting after lunch. The first round will be starting at 3 p.m.

We’ve been informed that SAT test will be over at 1:45 p.m. at the latest. Thus we believe that’s plenty of time for students who take SAT test in Bangkok and Chonburi to travel to Suvarnabhumi Campus which is in the middle between Bangkok and Chonburi. Though we still need someone from your institution to be here and register all of you in the morning, so please send someone.

We will be releasing the official tournament schedule by the end of this week so stay tuned!

Wish you all the best for 5th THSDC preparations.
