Tournament Side :

N=1 Rule
This tournament follows the N=1 rule. A team consists of 3 debaters and 1 adjudicator. The team which does not have an adjudicator attached will be considered a non-breaking team. The adjudicator will also need to be present in all the rounds to allow team to break.

Some institutions may wish to use judges from other institutions to qualify for the n=1 rule. That particular judge needs to stay for at least 6 preliminary rounds in order for you to break! The whole objective of enforcing n=1 rule is to encourage teachers and non-debating debaters to be more involved in the activity and help the club sustain in the long run. If you don’t want to grow more adjudicators, then at least find judges who’d stay for 6 rounds. It is very unfair on teams who managed to find people unfamiliar to debate from their own institutions, and make them adjudicate for the whole tournament.

Adjudicators
Adjudicators will be assigned to rooms during the tournament. This simply means that you HAVE to be in those rounds!! You’re not allowed to go and watch your own team even if you’re a trainee. Adjudicators are also here to learn how to judge debates and to help sustain their institution’s debate club. If you want the privilege of watching debate and do nothing to contribute to the tournament, please register as a participating observer and pay the extra fee.

Team members
All the team members will need to be present in all the rounds in order to qualify for the break. You can not switch team members because that’s cheating! We believe that breaking is a team’s effort, not an institution’s. Everyone in the team help each other break and they should take pride in it. Having someone else help the team or replace your team member is definitely will against the tournament’s rule and the team will be disqualified. However, if your team wants to register as a non-breaking, you’re welcome to do so.

Non-Breaking Team / Composite Team
Non-breaking team will not be allowed to break at the tournament. The team can be composed of anyone from any institution. The organising committee will judge whether we’ll allow the composite teams to compete.

Prep-Time
No electronic devices are allowed during prep-time!! Once you’ve received the motion, you’re not allowed to talk to anyone except your team member. If we caught you getting help or talking to anyone other than the organising committee, you’ll be disqualified straight away and a swing team will come replace you.

Registration on 6th October
All institutions are REQUIRED to send at least 1 representative to the registration in the morning of 6th October to confirm your participation. Institutions which are not present will be cut from the tournament.

Adjudication Test
All adjudicators who have not taken adjudication test at EU-Thailand or other nationally recognised tournaments will have to be present on the 6th to take the adjudication test. If the adjudicator miss the test, he/she will automatically becomes a trainee judge. Trainees do not make decisions during rounds but will be assessed by chairs.

Council Meeting
All institutions are REQUIRED to send at 1 representative ( can be anyone from the institution ) to the pre-council meeting on 6th October and council meeting on 8th October. Council meeting agenda will be sent a few days before the tournament. Should you have any suggestions, please feel free to raise it before the tournament or during registration on 6th October.

Rookie Status

The objective of rookie status / rookie final is to encourage institutions who just debuted into the English debating circle to remain in the circle. We understand that it could be very intimidating for new institutions at first, to meet with the well trained institutions. We wish to recognise their efforts to learn English debating with little chance of exposure to experienced trainers.

Rookie speaker requirement

1. The debater has never debated in a national or an international debate tournament before.
2. Is not from an institute that makes it to the main break at the championships or any of the last 2 preceding championships

Rookie team requirement

1. All 3 debaters have never debated in a national or an international debate tournament before.
2. Is not from an institute that makes it to the main break at the championships or any of the last 2 preceding championships

Certificates

Since this year, registration is done online. We’ll assume that all the spelling is correct. We’ve clearly stated that the last day anyone can make changes to their institutions registration is on 25th October. Thus there should be no reason why certificates need corrections. We will not be making any changes to the certificates and we will not post any to your institution afterwards.

Posting Awards

All institutions are REQUIRED to send at least 1 representative to the closing ceremony on 9th October to receive their certificates and awards. Trophies and certificates will NOT be posted to you afterwards like in the past.
